Daardoor nam het aandeel van illegaal gebruikte softwarekopieën met 3 procentpunten toe, van 38 procent in 2007 naar 41 procent in 2008. Dat illegale gebruik van software leverde de softwarebedrijven een schadepost van 53 miljard dollar op, 11 procent (5,1 miljard dollar) meer dan in 2007. Van de 108 individuele landen die in dit rapport onderzocht werden, daalde de piraterij van 2006 tot 2007 in zevenenzestig landen en steeg die slechts in acht landen.
